BSL Finger Spelling
Detailed App Info:
Application Description
This App has been produced in response to the feedback of BSL students, as many feel they lack opportunity for receptive fingerspelling practice. It has been designed with level two students in mind. In level two exams students have to understand fingerspelling in a video story (unit 201), and also fingerspelling of the tutor in a conversation (unit 203). It is also suitable for level one improvers and level three beginners.
The running time is 2.5 hours. There are 70 tests in total, each test containing 20 words or phrases. Most of the tests are lists of single words, but some have two or more. Some of the tests are sentences or proverbial sayings. These will be more challenging and you may have to watch a few times.
The fingerspelling is presented with a natural hand position. This is in line with how it is presented in assessments. You will see most of the letters clearly, but some will be more of a challenge, and will require you to work out letters you canʼt quite see using the letters you do know.
This App has been produced without the usual clues from lip pattern. This will improve your fingerspelling skill more rapidly as there will be no clues from lip reading.
The best way to use this app is to start at test one and work through to test 70, as they become a little faster, with more difficult words/names as the learner progresses through.
Watch each name/word and then pause and write it down. If you don't catch all the letters, write down the ones you do see. Then you can check the answers at the end of each test.
When you have done all seventy go back and do them again to see if you have improved!
