Our story begins in 1909, when Santos-Dumont stirred Paris with his flying machines, and set a trend with his crooked-flap hat and
the first wristwatch ever to be known. Meanwhile, in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, the Spanish Celso Martinez Carrera opened a workshop to produce the Patente bed, considered as a hallmark in Brazilian modern design. From then on, after some ups and downs, national industry has been consolidated, Brazilian furniture has gained identity and, towards the end of the twentieth century, our designers, headed by the Campana brothers, have gained international visibility.To celebrate a century of design, we tell memorable trajectories of important creators, sweep through the 1950s and 60s – the golden age of national design –, and reach the most recent works of younger designers. We do hope this book may be a significant contribution to the recognition and memory of Brazilian design.
