When you start the Energy Charger, it recognizes your percentage of the battery and displays it in the form of a battery picture. You just need to shake the iPhone/iPod to "charge" the battery. If the battery is already full, the iPhone/iPod will vibrate to signal you. For uncharging press and hold the special button.
