Many of the experiences and games available to children today involved goal-oriented, structured play.  However, unstructured play is critical to a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development.  In fact, a study at the University of Washington showed that children who played with building blocks, one of the most basic forms of unstructured play, scored as much as 15% higher on language assessments.

Whether this result is due to diversion from less productive activities, such as television, is unclear.  What is clear is the importance of providing children with free-play opportunities.  (No doubt, it is even more important for parents and care-givers to join in those opportunities!)
