«Gop-Stop» is a buffoonery, or rather a popular print in which the provincial lifestyle is much mocked at. The plot of the story alludes to the Robin Hood ballads. It is set in a provincial town with the only enterprise and a couple of outlaws going into stealing and robbery. Life is quiet and stable, people are contented, the rank of the town elite is defined. The town is run by a mayor and his son serviced by a gay butler. Quite unexpectedly a former criminal authority Ali Baba – a father of the male lead Vaska returns from the asylum [durka] . To form a complete set of Robin Hood characters Vaska and his friend Taras are joined by lady Marion – a Ukrainian prostitute Mary. Now the village men have set forth to fight corruption, bring the wicked mayor to repent for misdeeds, restore fairness and – oh dear! – deprive people of faith in the good tsar! And of course, as in every fairy tale, the «Gop-Stop» has got a morale which is sounded at the end of the film by the famous cartoonist Garry Bardeen (Pavel Bardeen’s father): «There is no better fun than fighting for freedom!»
