Auguste Rodin on your iPhone or iPad : his greatest masterpieces collected in this brand new application.

Auguste RODIN (1840-1917)

French sculptor Auguste Rodin took classes at the School of Decorative Arts, known colloquially as the ‘Little School’. This followed his failing of the entrance exam to the School of Fine Art three times – an ordeal which has often been considered a catalyst of the ambition that let him to eventually become one of the greatest sculptors of the nineteenth century. In 1864, Rodin became a student of Carrier-Belleuse, who in time would shift from master to friend, and of whom he would make a bust of almost twenty years later. In 1877, Rodin exhibited his plaster work The Defeated at the ‘Cercle de Bruxelles’, and again at the Salon des Artistes Français under the title of The Age of Bronze. The work provoked a real scandal, due to the unprecedented detail with which it was rendered. Accused of moulding from a cast, Rodin was finally cleared of all suspicion, notably as a result of the support of Carrier-Belleuse, and the affair finally allowed the genius of the sculptor to be revealed to the broader public. As a recognised artist, he worked in a studio and marble works on the rue de l’Université in Paris.

In 1880, the state commissioned a cast of his The Age of Bronze, and a monumental door, for the future Museum of Decorative Arts. It was the beginning of a long string of public commissions which, until his death, never ceased and always somehow ended in some form of scandal. Revolutionising sculpture by liberating form, the work of Rodin was also marked by his admiration for Michelangelo, whose non finito method he utilised in his own way, allowing, as it were, his figures to appear from blocks of marble in which they had been kept prisoner.
