Capish
Detailed App Info:
Application Description
The purpose of Capish is to make language learning fun and efficient.
To make language learning fun, Capish makes it personal. Capish recognizes the fact that people enjoy different things in life, written content included. So instead of Capish offering language learning content to the user, it lets the user, who knows which content he enjoys, to input his own language learning content into Capish. What Capish offers is a framework for presenting this content for optimal learning.
Capish is developed by a language learner and is opinionated about what the most efficient approach to learning a foreign language is. Capish is based around the concept of Comprehensible Input, which is supported by the latest language research.
The intended use of Capish is to load into the app two text files of the book you want to read, one in a language you are familiar with and the other in the target language. These will then be presented side by side so that the user quickly can compare the two texts. Capish also lets the user load the audio book of the foreign language text. Hearing the speech of a foreign language while seeing the text, and being able to get the meaning is the optimal approach to learning a language.
Capish also provides two very important controls for managing the loaded audio file.
- The first one enables the user to set markers in the audio file so that he or she quickly can hear a sentence repeated as many times as needed.
- The other important control enables the user to slow down the tempo of the audio so to ensure that he or she gets what is said in the foreign language.
Even though a user possesses a parallel text, it is not guaranteed that you will be able to infer the meaning for every single word of a sentence in a foreign language. Therefore Capish offers a small "browser" to enable the user to select single word in his text file and quickly be taken to an online dictionary of his or her choice to see the translation.
Another feature that is vital to Capish is that it "bookmarks" the text files and audio so that the user after having closed the app can come back to the exact point where they left off.
Capish supports ordinary text files (.txt). It was decided that this format was the best for the intended purpose since so many other text formats can easily be converted into text files.
