Ever wondered what a particular color looks like? Look it up in the Color Dictionary!

Color Dictionary works just like a regular dictionary, but instead of giving you definitions of words, it shows you the colors whose names match your query. In addition to actually seeing the colors, you get their definitions in terms of standard named hues, degrees of saturation, and brightness, as well as their synonyms - other color names that refer to the same standard color. Technically speaking, Color Dictionary maps thousands of color names to the 267 NBS/ISCC standard centroid colors originally identified by the National Bureau of Standards.

Data used in this Color Dictionary is derived from the work of John Foster, which is in turn based on the work of David Mundie, which itself was based on the work of the researchers at the National Bureau of Standards. Thanks to Aubrey Jaffer for his exhaustive research on Color-Name Dictionaries, and very special thanks to John Foster for the permission to use his data on NBS Centroids and Color Names to create this Color Dictionary application.

Data used in this Color Dictionary is made openly available on the Color Dictionary website: http://colordictionary.heroku.com
