Your guide to understanding the sequence of events for the Battle of Monocacy in 1864

This new application is based on work created for the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies at Frederick Community College new website:http://www.crossroadsofwar.org/

In conjunction with expert historians from the National Park Service, Equator Maps has develop an interactive iPad application that provides a step by step animation of the events of each stage of the Battle of Monocacy. The initial chapters show the context of the battle in the Potomac region which led to the this important Battle which was eventually called the "Battle that Saved Washington."

Sensing an undefended path to Washington. Confederate General Robert E. Lee instructed Lieutenant General Jubal Early to attack the Union Capital. Learning of the Confederate movement, Union forces met the Confederate army just south of Frederick, Maryland at Monocacy Junction on the morning of July 9th, 1864. Although the Confederates won the battle, the day spent fighting allowed the Union army just enough time to send reinforcements to Washington. General Early’s army was forced to return to Virginia.

The five chapters of this application provide a rich understanding of the battle. See how important regional centers such as Baltimore, Washington, and Frederick played a role. See how the terrain around the town of Frederick, Maryland affected the course of the battle.
