Application Description
Designed for: Nursing, Social Work, Counseling Students and any Psychiatric Care Professional
40 scenarios to improve critical thinking.
Instructions for the student:
These scenarios can be used on campus, at clinical or on the go. They are designed is to deepen critical thinking and promote your understanding of what psychiatric care is.
Exercise 1 Prioritization: Randomly select 5 scenarios and arrange them in the order of highest to lowest priority.
Exercise 2 Delegation: Select scenario’s and determine what parts could be delegated to another healthcare team member. How and what would you communicate to those team members and what feedback will you request be reported back to you.
Exercise 3 Research: Determine what problem(s) are identified in the scenario. Use resources to research the problem and determine what the provider must consider when working in this type of situation.
Exercise 4 Discussion: Take the cards to your study group or clinical post conference to discuss your thoughts and get feedback.
Exercise 5 Collaboration: Pair up with another student and select 5 or more cards. Individually rank the cards from highest to lowest priority. Describe the actions you would take to correct the situation. Then compare your answers.
For potential answers consult with staff at the facility or your instructor regarding evidenced based practice.

These scenarios are a grouping of conversation starters that promote open communication among students and faculty. Layered Learning programs are all designed to be adjunct friendly.
Consistency is hard to achieve among clinical groups. Using this tool each group will have a consistent base of situations to take to their next level of learning.
Use the critical thinking scenarios when you are out of ideas but not out of time. They can be assigned for clinical make-up, in class or as remediation in the office.
The cards allow the educator to evaluate the student’s understanding of Psychiatric concepts. Give them a chance to correct one another and exhaust their thoughts. The students will likely show you where there are gaps in knowledge.
