Story behind the “Healing Magic Wand”
At its heart the story behind the “Healing Magic Wand” app is about hope and love. For the past few years I’ve kept at my desk at the cancer treatment center where I work, a toy magic wand. It has a clear, rose colored, plastic, heart-shaped head with LED lights in it. It is battery powered and motion activated. When you wave it the LED lights sparkle and it emits the most perfect, upward cascading "briiing" sound. Sometimes I will ask patients passing my desk in the cancer center library if they would like a "free magic wand treatment". At first they look puzzled until I show them the wand. Then they nod with a shy smile. I wave the wand over them with a flourish. The lights flash and the wand makes its lovely, uplifting, tingle inspiring sound. Their smiles widen with delight. In that moment they feel, in some ineffable way, better. Sometimes I will take the wand down to the infusion suite where people are getting their chemotherapy or other infusions. With their consent, I will wand them, their infusion bags, their pumps, and their tubing. Everyone loves it. It always brings a smile. I even have a few regulars who drop by my desk just to get a "wand waggle" before or after their infusion therapy. They feel loved and it makes them feel happy and hopeful. Is it magic? Yes. It is the magic of hope and love.
When Lepeng and his company approached me about collaborating on hypnotherapy apps I realized that many health-care professionals carry iPhones (and often enjoy showing off their favorite apps), and that here was a way to bring a helpful playfulness into the patient/caregiver relationship. So I asked Lepeng if he would be willing to collaborate on creating a “Healing Magic Wand” app to be given away. His response was enthusiastic.
So here, dear iPhone/iPod users, is your very own Healing Magic Wand. May it help you spread much hope, light, and love in the world. We are, after all, in this together. And who couldn’t use a little hope and love to light their way?
