Application Description
The SpellTrekking app uses a multi-sensory approach to teaching spelling and reading and involves sight, hearing, touch and voice.
The student is on the SS Spell Trek, a rocket ship on a mission around the solar system, guided by the on board computer C.A.T.C.H. First stop is the Space Station where they learn about the app. Their mission is to become a space pilot, and they do this by earning stamps in their Space Passport as they work their way through each planet. They start out by choosing which background color and text colors are easiest for them to read. Then they work their way through a practice lesson.
After visiting the Space Station they can fly off to the planets. These modules are in ever increasing levels of difficulty, so you can work your way through the whole Solar System, or for an older child or higher skillset you could decide to start at one of the more advanced levels. When you pick a planet the SS Spell Trek blasts off and the child can steer the rocket by tilting the iPad. When they land on the planet you can choose which lesson to work on. To unlock a lesson you have to complete all the previous lessons in that planet, once it has been unlocked you can go back and repeat it at any time.
In each lesson the child hears the word and sees it on the screen. As they type the letters appear over the top of the word on the screen, in a different color, so they can see if they make mistakes. They then hear the word again and type it a second time, this time one or more letters may be missing and replaced by a *. Sometimes C.A.T.C.H. will say a word but no letters will appear on the screen, so the child has to type the whole word without seeing it first, if they have problems doing this they will get help. The words will make a sentence and include proper capitalization and punctuation. Each lesson includes typing multiple related sentences. After they complete a lesson they read it aloud and record it, and can then listen to it being played back. For each lesson they can earn up to 5 stars depending on how accurately they type the lesson. Typing is done on a QWERTY keyboard.
