“Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.”
-Claude Monet

As one of the founders of impressionism, Claude Monet had an unusual relationship with color. He is said to have spent many hours pondering the way that color shifts over the course of a day, and trying to capture that chromatic subtlety as best he could with brush and canvas. When you look at his paintings, you may feel as though you’re reading his field notes on that rare animal color, complete with in-depth observations on what it eats, its odd habits throughout the course of the day, and how (if you're lucky) it may be lured onto a canvas with the right combination of pigments.

The aim of this app is to bring you some of the same joy and torment that Monet felt as he worked to capture color. As you play, you’ll see a series of Monet’s most beautiful paintings, each with one or more of its carefully-chosen colors stripped away. Your goal for each painting is to figure out its missing colors, and add them back.

To re-create the missing colors, you’ll have access to a color palette which will let you mix the precise color that you’re after. Suppose you want to supply the missing color of Monet’s ocean: you may want to start with pure blue, then add some black and a little green, then maybe a touch more yellow; it’s all about sensing which color is missing from the painting, and re-creating it on your own. And as you gradually duplicate Monet’s original color choices, you’ll see the original, completed painting re-appear before you; you might not be Monet, but you can play him in this app.

In fact, in order to finish all of the paintings available, you’ll have to think a lot like Monet did. Should the color of that river be just a slightly darker blue than of the sky, or does it have just a touch more white? In the same way that Monet gradually adjusted his colors to fit the variety of subjects in front of him, you’ll recreate those same color choices and fill them in, appreciating the painting in a new way as you go.

Monet’s paintings are beautiful, and his choice of color is often astonishing. In order to see and understand these paintings as never before, try entering for a few minutes into The Mind of Monet!
