How could this possibly work?

This training is the brain child of the Ph.D. Izumi Tabata and his colleagues from National Institute of Health & Nutrition in Tokyo, Japan. They were looking for “the ideal” aerobics training protocol — one that would most efficiently increase fat burning and cardiovascular fitness. Such a plan, the researchers believed, should be:
- High Intensity
- Fitness self-sustaining
- Short

The total expenditure of calories (and fat!) is up to 50% greater with intense cardio, as most of the fat you burn with high-intensity cardio occurs after exercising, not during the workout itself.

Research presented in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise shows that when you work out using high-intensity intervals, the total amount of calories your body burns is elevated up to 142% more than low-effort aerobics within the hour after your workout.

This app uses GPS tracking to measure speed and distance, even when the app is in background. Continued use of GPS can significantly impact battery life, but in this case we don't expect any large effects, as the sessions are very short.
Still, it's worth mentioning - don't go running with low battery levels.
